Promotion of domestication and cultivation of promising medicinal plants (Phase I: 2009-14)

Farmers/ land owners can cultivate the medicinal plants that grow widely and having medicinal values to make the sufficient availability of these herbs and at the same time the farmers/ land owners can earn profit. The cultivation of Gymnema sylvestris, an antidiabetic medicinal herb was promoted by MCRC in farmers’ fields at Panrutti and they  were linked to the market.  Besides, hydroponic system of cultivation for Justicia gendrussa and Gymnema sylvestris were also optimized. Through hydroponic system, the plants can be grown in a mass scale in a short time period and minimize the land usage. Since the plants are grown under controlled conditions, pest and disease problems are less.
